“I’m stuck, I can’t seem to put words on the page.”
“I’m always working, I don’t have time to relax.”
“I can’t justify not working. Even when I do try to “relax” I just feel anxiety as I spend the whole time trying to forget my looming deadline.”
“I dread the writing process. It’s so painful.”
If you’re an academic writer, you’ve probably muttered at least one of these thoughts to yourself (or others). I know I did A LOT during my early years on the tenure track. Then, I decided to create writing rituals to regain control of my writing practice. Rather than beating myself up for not writing, I focused on figuring out what would make writing feel better.
These candles are the result, and I want to share them with you!

Each candle contains a wood wick that softly crackles as it burns and a 100% pure essential oil blend that combines different scents that are thought to help you relax, feel more energized, or focus. I hand-pour each candle myself in Maryland, USA and avoid any toxic ingredients that might cause headaches.
At the beginning of my writing ritual, I pour a cup of hot tea, light my candle, and write. I also get up regularly to move around and spark creative thoughts as I stretch my legs and increase blood flow throughout my body. Since I began this ritual, I’ve published at least two peer-reviewed articles each year despite having a 3-3 teaching load and no teaching support.
Making writing feel pleasant was a game changer. It was the key to unlocking my productivity and I hope it can help you too.
